Beginnings


Rafael van der Vaart was born on February 11, 1983, in Heemskerk, Netherlands. His mother comes from Spain. He started his soccer career playing for "De Kennemers" when he was 4 years old.


He played there from 1987 to 1993. In 1993, he went to a tryout with the large Dutch club, Ajax Amsterdam, which are famous for their very good youth teams. He convinced the coaches with his skills and got a youth contract.


He made his senior debut for Ajax on April 19, 2000, against FC Den Bosch. All in all, van der Vaart played 117 games and scored 52 goals for Ajax even when he struggled with several injuries.

He stayed 2 years, played 63 games and scored 24 goals for the English. Even when he showed good performances, there were always rumors of a transfer during his time in England.


Return to Hamburg


In the summer of 2012, Rafael van de Vaart returned to Germany to play for his old club Hamburger SV again. This transfer would be realized thanks to Hamburg's external financier.


Hamburg struggled with a couple of problems in the first half of the season. Van der Vaart was named the captain of the team again and Hamburg is now on the way to qualifying for the 2013 Europa League.
